signed, sealed, delivered- i'm yours

a lost art: the handwritten note.

i'm writing all these letters to my friends, and i love the way they aren't perfect or edited and have all these mistakes in them. they are very real. it's pretty time-consuming but i think in the end it will be worth it because they are much more personal than a typed 8x11... and plus, what is better than getting snail mail or little scribbled notes? I have some saved from almost every stage of my life and i have to say looking back on them is pretty magnificent. but maybe i'm alone in this sentiment... in an age where we just shoot each other e-mails, do you think it's worth it to hand write a note?

from le petit prince...

"People have stars, but they aren't the same. For travelers, the stars are guides. For other people, they're nothing but tiny lights. And for still others, for scholars, they're problems. For my businessman, they were gold. But all those stars are silent stars. You, though, you'll have stars like nobody else."

"What do you mean?"

"When you look up at the sky at night, since I'll be living on one of them, since I'll be laughing on one of them, for you, it'll be as if all the stars are laughing. You'll have stars that can laugh!"

And he laughed again.

"And when you're consoled (everyone is eventually consoled), you'll be glad you've known me. You'll always be my friend. You'll feel like laughing with me. And you'll open your windows sometimes just for the fun of it... And your friends will be amazed to see you laughing while you're looking up at the sky. Then you'll tell them, 'Yes, it's the stars. They always make me laugh!"

calling all fashion mavens,

if you are anything like me & wish you could dress up like Alice in Wonderland in public (without looking like a cupcake), then you should absolutely look into up-and-coming designer Erin Fetherston. her designs aren't exactly the big poofy dresses that Alice wears, but they certainly capture the harder, more badass if you will, side to the story. by that, I mean they're a little LSD, a little chaotic, and very girly. they are what i imagine to be the perfect embodiment of the nonsensical subconcious Carroll imagined when he wrote the book. Fetherston made the video posted below for her fall 09 collection, and it's nothing short of a brilliant way to showcase her approach to fashion. it's fun, innovative, whimsical, and has just enough rock n'roll to quench a restless young city girl's thirst. check it out below:

booonnnn appetit!

i just saw the movie Julie and Julia at my mama's request (editor's note: that is a complete lie, i really wanted to see it and i dragged her along for some mommy-daughter bonding). luckily, we both loved it! julie's story made me want to do something significant with this page because, well let's face it, as of right now this is half of a journal and half a site that is meant for other people... and a wee bit ADD, non? but anyway, the character Julie decides one day to make 524 of Julia Child's recipes for 365 days of the year. She goes through blood (literally), sweat (literally), and tears (very literally) to make sure she reaches her goal, and in the end she succeeds while captivating hundreds of people nationwide with her wit and dedication.
Now on the other hand, Julia Child's story was one that was not so unfamiliar to me. i grew up watching her show at my grandmama's house and i have always just loved her vivaciousness. it's contagious! she is fun and flamboyant and unapologetic and i just want to scoop her up into a big bear hug 99% of the time. she appreciates the good things in life, and just when you think she can't improve, she makes everything a little better with a dollop of butter- homeade, no doubt. what a way fabulous, fabulous way to live.
both women are amazing, and i would absolutely reccomend this movie to anyone looking for a great chick flick. i walked out of the theater smiling, and took home the lesson that no one should be afraid to say "yum" when they get something just right :)
that's all for now,
ls

thought of the day

if you ever involve yourself in someone else's life, make sure you have your own shit together and know what you're talking about first.

eye of the hurricane

I'm cleaning out my room, for good.
moving to college in 17 days.
moving away from NJ in December.
moving on.
moving 900 miles away from my sister.
spreading like oil and vinegar from my best friends.
moving forward.

today i found a love letter you wrote to me in 5th grade buried in my desk drawer and for the first time, i was able to laugh at what we were. for the first time in almost a year, i remembered why i used to love you. i remembered why there will always be a fond spot in my heart for you in the middle of all the resentment and bad memories. i remembered why, despite everything, i refuse to hate you. when i saw the letter i giggled, and then threw it into the trash with the rest of the 'valentines' i had saved from that year. call it closure if you will, but i think it's just acknowledgment that our lives crossed at one point, and then diverged at another. and you know what? i think i might just be a better, wiser person for it too. i think you unintentionally made me free.

everything is changing around me, but i feel calm.
i feel ready and prepared.
i feel exhilarated
i'm ready.

inside all of us is hope
inside all of us is fear
inside all of us is adventure
